There is a commonly held misconception that there were/are a plethora of performance parts, for Isuzu cars, available in Japan and they were/are cheap and readily available. This myth has been fostered and passed on by those who have little or no factual information or experience in the matter, or those with personal motivation to mislead the community. The myth is warmly received and gleefully passed on by those who can not afford the things that they want, and seek to take solace in thier dearth, as they justify their inability to buy the things they desire.

Unfortunately, the reality does not match the myth, and the Japanese envy the American market for both price and range of available products.
Japan had numerous very prestigious tuning shops that came out of the Isuzu Sports Car Club which was the factory backed racing effort dating from the mid 1960’s through the early 1990’s. Most of those companies moved on to specialize in other brands of vehicles or closed their doors. Only a few remain, and their offerings are severely reduced. In addition, nothing is stocked and everything is built after payment is received. Most items are modifications of the original pieces and are not completely new assemblies and require a donor core. This means that the customer paying for the product must also provide the core piece to be modified. The purchase price is extremely high, and the added cost of obtaining the core piece to be modified and shipping it to the shop to be modified pushes the complete cost into the stratospheric range.
Another noteworthy detail is that several of the Japanese shops are more craftsman and artisan than engineer and manufacturer. They do not rely on technical drawings and their products are not made in production runs. Their work is most often beautiful and extremely high quality, but rarely consistent. What one customer purchases and receives in one month may be completely different from what another customer receives when he purchases the same item a few months later.

The following is a comparison based on published prices found currently and in historic documents and advertisements, of the prices of performance parts for Isuzu cars. These prices are from the Japanese shops and the lone USA based shop. All prices are stated retail prices. The prices do not include any shipping and handling or taxes.
